A commercial furniture manufacturer with idle capacity has two options. Fill it with whatever work is available at whatever price — or leave it idle until the right work arrives. Almost everyone takes the first option, because the second one is expensive and looks like failure while you are doing it.

OutDo's plant at Shindewadi is built for roughly 25,000 units of office furniture a month, and has been running at about a fifth of that. Not because the work is not there. Because the work that was easiest to win was the work that would have turned OutDo into a fabricator competing on price — quoting whatever the drawing said, with no reason for anyone to ask for us by name.

So OutDo spent the capacity differently. On barcoding every furniture panel through every station, so a delivery date could be a commitment rather than an estimate. On manufacturing both grades — presentable and operational — off one floor, so a specifier could stop juggling vendors. On dispatching commercial office furniture in three to four weeks against an industry standard of five to six.

Around seventy per cent of the work OutDo is proudest of was specified in by an architect or a PMC firm, not won by knocking on a door. That told us what to build the furniture company around.

OutDo is now filling that capacity — with commercial office furniture work that arrives because an architect specified it.

That is a slower way to grow a furniture company. It is the only way to build one worth recommending.
